Buzzard's Roost in Big Basin Redwood State Park (California / USA) ~ Quiet trail in redwood forest

Buzzards' Roost Hiking

Memorial Day Weekend!

Last weekend was a long weekend with Memorial Day Weekend in the U.S.  We went camping in Big Basin Redwood State Park in California.  It was our first camping this year.  Unfortunately, an event in Japanese school was in the same weekend.  So that we went there after the event.  Since we live in a bit far from the school and the park, we need to prepare for the event and camping before leaving our home.  So it was busy in the morning on Saturday.  It was a nice camping and we had a great time with other families and kids over there!
Big Basin Redwood State Park

The park is on the west side of Silicon Valley, between San Jose and San Cruz.  It is about hour driving from San Jose where the Japanese school is located.   There are many camp sites in the park in a nice quiet redwood forest.   There is a nice shade by big redwood trees.  The temperature in daytime is not getting really high due to the shade.  It is probably a bit cold in this season of a year.  Especially, it was really hot day last weekend, something around 80~90 degrees F.  However it was cold early in the morning.  Only problem was there were many mosquitoes at the camp site and we need to keep putting insect repellent spray all the time.

Activities in the park!

We went there a several times and typically we joined a campfire hosted by the park rangers and some ranger program, especially kids enjoyed them.  Although we went a campfire, the primary activity this year was a hiking on the second day.  We usually took a walk around the camp site in the past.  However kids are getting older and they can hike longer trail.  So that we try to hike a small peak near the camp site.

The campfire this year, we were disappointed because they just did some quiz to identify an animal from their foot print and etc.  In the past year, a ranger had a presentation to explain a nature and animal in the park.  It is a good opportunity even for adults to learn a lot of things about the park and environment.

Hiking

Taking about the hiking, we went "Buzzard's Roost this year.  It is about 4.8 miles round trip with 1,200 feet elevation gain.   The trail goes through a nice quiet redwood forest.  There is no redwood trees around the top and the trail is on a rock around the top.  It is really nice view from the top.
The kids led other people all the time and we realized that they were really glowing!
Overall, the trail is nice and easy even people who usually do not hike so often can enjoy hiking.  I strongly recommend this trail when people visit the park.   We took about 3 hours round trip with spending a lot of time on the top.  We stayed at the top around 40 minutes.
