Point Reyes Mt. Wittenberg ~ Hiking in a primeval forest fog

YouTube Video

This weekend, we went to Mt. Wittenberg in Point Reyes National Seashore.  It is the highest point in the park.

Point Reyes is a National Seashore in the north of San Francisco, which has a nice beach, trails and camp grounds.  We usually play in a beach, but this time we tried a half day hiking in the park.

The destination of the hiking was Mt. Wittenberg, which is the highest mountain or a hill in the park.   The trail head is Bear Valley Visitor Center.  We try to get parking spots on the trail head, we met the other families at the visitor center at 8am.  When we were arrived at the visitor center, there were only a several cars in the parking lot and we had no problem to get the parking spots.  Unfortunately it was cloudy and it could be raining soon.   However, we were getting into the trail anyway.

The trail head was behind the visitor center and there are two trail entrances and they are connected each other as a loop.  It supposes to branch to Horse Trail.  We started on an entrance on the north side, but the trail junction was not very clear and we got to a paved road.  It was obviously wrong and we turn back.  On the way back, then we found the junction and got into Horse Trail.  So people needs to be careful since it was not very obvious from the visitor center.

There were a lot of poison oak on the both side of the trail.  The trail is not steep as I thought.  Actually, it is gentle slope in a red wood primeval forest.  It was cloudy and we could not see a nice view from the trail.  In some location, it was foggy and a little dark, it was fantastic in a positive wording.   After some point, it was always in fog and it was colder than what we thought.

After one and half out, we reached a junction of the peak.  We headed to the peak, but there was no sign which indicate the top.  It is really flat forest and it was hard to tell where would be the top.  So that we just stop somewhere in the forest and took an early lunch.  The weather was not very good, we started being back to the visitor center.  The original plan was descending Meadow Trail, however due to the bad weather, we was descending Mt. Wittenberg Trail.   Then, within 5 minutes, it became clear sky.   Since we expected to see a beach from the top,   we had thought we would return and see the view.   But we did not do because kids wanted to go to a beach after the hiking.  They rushed to be back to the visitor center soon.  The trail is steeper, but it is shorter than the trail we were ascending.  So it was really short time to be back to the visitor center.  The total is about 3 hours and half.

After that, we went to a beach and kids were really happy on the day.
